High purity silica for use as a routine blank sample
Description
The silica blank sold by Portable Spectral Services is a high purity silica material. Generally this is best used as a routine blank sample when conducting analysis on the portable XRF. It forms a key part of quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) sampling procedures.
Why use this?
Silica is not detected by the XRF. It can be easy to determine what is contamination from a QAQC scan with silica. Contamination does occur with sample analysis, especially for sample types such as pulp. Typically the cause of contamination is from something as simple as build up of material around the detector from changing samples.
Regular scans of a blank sample will lead to better quality analysis, as contamination can be actioned in a timely way before it creates larger problems. When a QAQC scan suggests contamination, it can be as simple as using a cleaning brush to dust away sample buildup or change a window to reduce or eliminate this contamination. We recommend a second or even third scan of the silica blank after using the cleaning brush or changing a window to check that it was indeed the source of the contamination. A silica blank can be the difference between average and very reliable data.

A silica blank is an essential part of a reliable QAQC procedure when conducting sample analysis on any portable XRF.
