Portable Spectral Services is the Bruker Authorised Applications Centre (BA²C )for Australasia. As the BA²C for this region, we are able to provide expert application services to Bruker Clients and representatives including:

  • Creating custom calibrations on any S1 TITAN or Tracer instrument
  • Supporting existing calibrations for S1 TITAN or Tracer instrument
  • Improved accuracy of existing applications
  • Training in the use of Brukers S1 TITAN and Tracer instruments.
  • Supply of Certified Reference Materials and check samples for custom calibrations

Why do a custom calibration?

A custom calibration can greatly improve the accuracy of your pXRF results by being fitted to the exact matrix that you are working with and allowing for custom correction due to element overlaps, escape, sum and diffraction peaks and interferences caused by your specific matrix. This will allow increased confidence in the results coming from your pXRF.

How is this different from an empirical (type) standardisation? (also called calibration factors or coefficients)

Generic type standardisation or Calfactors are simple regression factor(s) that fits the slope of pXRF results against known laboratory results. This factor will compensate for the differences in matrix to a certain extent but does not allow for the element interferences, overlaps and escape peaks, and all elements in the factory calibration must be corrected for each empirical calibration.

A custom calibration looks holistically at the material and how the elements interact with each other and is created using proprietary software that calculates the best results for your samples and incorporates overlaps, escape peaks and matrix correction for single or multiple beams.  Custom calibrations on a HH XRF are similar to “user” made calibrations on tradition EDX benchtop units.

Can I reprocess data from previous samples through the new calibration?

This is the advantage Bruker brings to its customers; all previously pXRF analysed samples can be reprocessed using any new calibration so you get one set of data; this is achieved either on the instrument or desktop where the instrument running conditions are the same for the custom and previous calibration.

What materials can custom calibrations be created for?

Custom calibrations can be created for anything that the pXRF can analyse; this can include but not restricted to soil, ore material, plastics, welds, plant materials, ceramics and even paints. All we require is a set of representative samples that have laboratory results performed on them for the elements you require. For the best results samples should be homogeneous with a good range of elements provided in the laboratory analysis. The resulting application will then be applicable within the ranges defined by the reference material.

Can I choose which elements are calibrated for?

Absolutely; any element from Mg to U. If the pXRF can analyse the element then we can calibrate for it. You can choose to calibrate for a small range of pathfinder elements to aid with your exploration or include a whole suite of elements to cover a much wider range the choice is yours.

Can I use this calibration on more than one instrument?

Definitely we will need to run the standards on each instrument before transferring the calibration over.

Do you have any off the shelf matrix matched calibrations?

Yes, we have a range of ready to go calibrations that can be added to your pXRF for many of the common elements and exploration areas of interest in Australasia.
